All courses in the series are badged. Each course can be taken as a single offering, while all three courses stack together to create the White Mountains Sense of Place Badge.

August 19, 2022 – Reading the Geologic History of the White Mountains Landscape

In this session, we will discuss hundreds of millions of years of earth history that led to the development of the White Mountains landscape that we see today. Although we will identify a few of the most common rocks and minerals, we will emphasize how to observe and interpret the White Mountains landscape to understand the dramatic events (volcanoes, mountain uplift, erosion (glaciation) that produced the White Mountains as we see them today. We will begin with a PowerPoint presentation and discussion indoors and then caravan by car to a few geologic stops in the Mount Washington Valley and nearby White Mountains. We will picnic (bring your own) at one of the geologic stops.

September 16,2022 – Forest Ecology: The Trees are Talking with Each Other

Have you ever wondered how forests “work”? In this day-long session, we will visit and explore different forest-types in the White Mountains (old-growth forest & regrowth forest) to observe and interact with the living organisms that make up these wild, complex communities. We will blend modern scientific methods with indigenous wisdom to better understand forest communities. Students should be prepared to walk on uneven ground for up to one mile while visiting field sites.

October 21, 2022 – Winter Ecology: Surviving Winter

Have you ever wondered how wildlife can make it though 6 months of freezing cold, snow and ice? In the day-long course, you’ll gain insights into the amazing adaptations of wild animals (and plants too!). Through both classroom discussion and field exploration, we will better understand the amazing feats of science and the resilience that allow many animals to remain active all winter long.

Rochelle Eastman has her education on the fast track at 91Թ /rochelle-eastman-has-her-education-on-the-fast-track-at-white-mountains-community-college/ Tue, 12 Jan 2021 19:47:02 +0000 /?p=9175

Rochelle Eastman believes in maximizing her education and has followed through by putting herself on a path to earn most of the credits she needs for an associate degree at 91Թ (91Թ) – while in high school. The senior at Littleton High School has leveraged New Hampshire’s online and dual enrollment programs with 91Թ to fulfill her love of learning and accelerate her education.

Motivated and wise beyond her years, Rochelle has numerous educational interests including psychology, human biology, professional writing, quantitative reasoning and human growth and development. In her junior year – after discussions with her guidance counselor and school principal – she recognized she could finish her high school requirements well ahead of schedule by taking some additional online courses and then use her senior year to take college classes that would give her the remaining high school credits she needed and count towards an Associate degree in Health Science.

“I have a pretty good relationship with my guidance counselor and I was talking with her one day and I think it was my idea to take only college classes. And she said we’d totally encourage and support you with that. We just put together what we needed to make it happen,” she said. “We see a lot of advertisements for e-Start and Running Start courses in high school and I don’t think that a lot of students really know how beneficial they can be.”

In addition to the and programs, 91Թ also offers the Early College program which allows high school students to enroll in regular college credit courses that can be applied to a degree or certificate program or transferred to another institution. These courses are taught by 91Թ faculty and costs 50% of the tuition cost of the course. STEM Scholarships can also be applied to these courses. Rochelle has taken advantage of both the eStart and Early College programs.

Halfway through her senior year in high school as of January 2021, Rochelle needs only three more courses to earn her associate degree. Of course, she has a plan to do so ahead of her next chapter, which will include earning a bachelor’s degree, possibly in pre-med or biology. In the spring of 2021, she’ll take two courses with 91Թ and then one more in the summer. She has applied to Dartmouth College, the University of New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce University and is also looking at exploring educational opportunities out west, possibly in Colorado or Utah.

“I love learning. I want to learn as much as I can. I hope to be in an environment where I’m surrounded by other people that really have the same drive and motivation that I do, so I can really flourish,” she said.

With one foot in high school and the other in college, Rochelle has valued her time in 91Թ classes and has great appreciation for the faculty. “My psychology professor, for example, is always positive and it’s obvious she likes what she’s teaching, which is motivating to me. I’m excited to go to class every week,” she said.

She had a similar experience in her professional writing class, which provided her with real life skills. “Everything that we’ve done is learning how to do things that I’ll be using in my everyday life. Taking classes with the community college has given me an idea that this is really cool stuff. I’d love learning about this for the rest of my life.”

Outside of the classroom, Rochelle lives a full and busy life of a teenager living in the White Mountains. She’s been dancing for more than 12 years, plays numerous instruments and is an avid skier. She likes to surround herself with other people who want to learn.

“There’s so much more to life than high school,” she said.

NECHE On The Road: 91Թ Pit Stop /neche-on-the-road-wmcc-pit-stop/ Fri, 13 Nov 2020 16:19:50 +0000 /?p=8697 As the new president of this venerable organization, I decided the best way I could fully understand the challenges and unique strengthsof the schools we servewas to go out and see the institutions for myself, talk to their leaders, and even visit with some of their students. It’s a chance for me to learn about the extraordinary work going on at colleges and universities across New England duringthese extraordinary times whenwe are allso deeply impacted by the pandemic. It’s an opportunity to reach out toour members and share some of my early thoughts about where accreditation is going. And quite frankly, after months ofworking remotely (our tirelessly devoted staff is now workingtwo days a week in the office for the foreseeable future), I’meager to develop the helpful, supportive personal relationships thathave always characterized the organization. And in addition to this blog, I will also be doing a podcast of my interviews so you can access that as well.

Thanks for joining us our journey. I hope you enjoy the trip!

They call it the North Country and guess what? Itisvery far north, with Berlin, New Hampshire, home of 91Թ, just about sixty miles from the Canadian border. Betty and I arrived in the North Country on a Sunday, put on our hiking boots and a whole lot of layers, and headed up Lincoln Woods on the Franconia Ridge Trails toward Mt. Flume. They claim Mt. Flume is one of the easier 4,000-foot climbs in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. (There are 48.) It is also listed as a six- to eight-hour trek so we started too late to get to the top before dark. All I can say is thank goodness for that. We got to about 3,000 feet after about four hours on the trail (walking straight up and then careening down) and man, did it kick my you-know-what. Betty, on the other hand, seemed just fine and dandy.

After a good night’s sleep, we were off to Berlin and 91Թ. 91Թ just celebrated its 50th anniversary and its President, Dr. Charles Lloyd is a young man very proud of his college. And for very good reason. With a 54% graduation rate, 91Թ ranks 20th among over 850 two-year colleges in getting students through graduation in 3 years or less. That’s something to truly celebrate. 91Թ offers 48 programs in three locations: Littleton, North Conway, and Berlin, and enrolls about 1,000 students, 300 of whom are dual-enrollment high schoolers. 91Թ has found if it can actively engage high school students in beginning college, they are far more likely to stick with their education, learn a good-paying trade or vocation, or proceed on to get their full 4-year degree.

Two interesting side notes about the dual-enrollment group: The per-credit price for these students is fifty percent of the regular price (or around $100 a credit) and thanks to the Governor’s edict, up to four STEM courses can be taken for free.

We had a chance to visit with some students who were on campus in the culinary program and the welding program. Monday was Sandwich Day on the culinary side and let me tell you, those students can definitely put together two pieces of bread.  I was ready to sign up on the spot.

students in kitchen
Lots going on in the kitchen classroom!

Betty, on the other hand, was totally enamored with the welding program and we might have to rent a little place in Berlin so she can get behind the torch. Welding is a nine-month program, with two additional months if you want to learn pipe fitting. Every graduate of the 91Թ program has a job upon graduation (companies come directly to the college to recruit), and with overtime some graduates can make over $60,000/year straightaway.

Their teacher Michael Pike actually keeps track of each graduate on his i-Phone, current salary included! He’s like a very proud papa, and even has a set of twin young women in his class who are kicking pipe right now.

About 5 feet tall and 95 pounds of pure feistiness, the twins are totally great welders!
